Southeast Asia: Disaster relief after earthquakes and storms
Work in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines in full swing

26 October 2009. After a series of disasters in October 2009, Malteser International supports its partners in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines in their disaster response.
  
In Sumatra, Malteser International teams provide 1,700 families in the village of Pilubang in Sungai Limau sub-district with tarpaulins, blankets, sleeping mats and emergency kits. The rehabilitation of a primary school was started. In Vietnam, hygiene kits for 5.300 families were distributed and 670 families received iron sheets for first repairs of their houses.

In the Philippines, Malteser International supports the Philippine Association of the Order of Malta and its local partners in assisting 2,040 families in the disaster situation. Further emergency relief for about 2,800 families in remote areas is foreseen.

Floods in West Africa:
People in Burkina Faso need help

10 September 2009. Heavy rains in the past weeks have led to severe floods all over West Africa. Burkina Faso and its capital city, Ouagadougou, were among the regions most affected.

25,000 houses in Ouagadougou and surrounding areas were destroyed. 130,000 people lost their homes.

Malteser International in cooperation with the Order of Malta France supports the affected people with tents, blankets, drinking water and food items. The local Malteser relief service cares for the injured and has set up tents for the homeless. Further tents, medicine and first aid material are needed urgently.

Displaced children in Pakistan19 August 2009. Three medical teams of Malteser International are providing health care for internally displaced people now returning to their home villages in the Swat District in north-western Pakistan.

 

“There is currently no adequate health care for the returning families,” reports Dr. Jürgen Clemens, Malteser International Desk Officer for Pakistan.

 

“According to the local authorities many health centres are damaged or completely destroyed and are in urgent need for qualified medical staff.”

Sri Lanka_Vavunyia_IDP camp_mobile water tank
10 July 2009. Since June, Malteser International has been providing mobile water tank vehicles in order to improve the constant shortages of drinking water in the camps in Vavuniya and Pulmoddai.

Malteser International welcomes the recent improvement of access to the camps for international relief organisations. “The internally displaced persons, however, should soon be able to return to their villages and their homes.”, said Nicolas de Cock de Rameyen, President of Malteser International.
